The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is just 78 miles south of Kanab, Utah and is open from May 15 to October 15. During this time visitors may travel from Kanab through the Kaibab Forest along the Kaibab Plateau to the edge of the Grand Canyon.
The North Rim of the canyon is 9,000 feet in elevation and is approximately 1,000 feet higher than the south rim at 8,000 feet. As you stand on the rim you are looking down approximately 4,000 feet to the Colorado River at the base of the canyon. The Colorado River passes 275 river miles through the canyon and has carved through many different layers of sediment to reveal the canyon as it is today.
While the North Rim is only open part of the year, the South Rim is open all year. Services are available near the national park.
Popular activities in the Grand Canyon include hiking or riding mules into the chasm and biking in the area. It is important to note that virtually all trails into the inner canyon are relatively strenuous. Another fun activity is river rafting down the Colorado River. This is a great activity since it will help keep people stay cool on hot summer afternoons. Those seeking a different kind of thrill will enjoy an aerial tour in a fixed wing aircraft or helicopter which give people a bird's eye view of the region; air tours are based outside of the national park. There are many ways to see the Grand Canyon.
